Berkley Hudson

The City of Columbus welcomes author Berkley Hudson to discuss the history of Black Columbus residents as photographed by O.N. Pruitt. This event will be held February 26, at 4:00 p.m. in the Columbus City Hall Reception Room. Hudson, a native of Columbus, is a journalist, scholar, and the author of “O. N. Pruitt's Possum Town,” which highlights images capturing the essence of life in Columbus, Mississippi, during the first half of the 20th Century. A subject of Pruitt’s photography himself, he brings a unique perspective to Pruitt’s work, exploring its impact on our understanding of civil rights, community, and the American South.

In conjunction with this lecture, the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System presents the traveling exhibit, “Mr. Pruitt’s Possum Town: Photographing Trouble & Resilience in the American South,” available for viewing at Columbus City Hall from February 1-29. This exhibit offers a glimpse into Pruitt's extensive archive, showcasing his unique ability to capture the complexities of life in a segregated South with empathy and insight.

Friendly City Books will be present for the lecture, offering attendees the opportunity to purchase their own copy of Hudson’s award-winning book, “O. N. Pruitt's Possum Town.” This book provides an expanded narrative of Pruitt’s contributions to photography and history, enriched by Hudson’s detailed research and personal reflections.

Join us at Columbus City Hall to explore the rich history of Possum Town through the eyes of one of its most prolific documentarians. This event is free and open to the public, providing a unique opportunity to reflect on the complexities of community, race, and historical memory in the American South. The community is encouraged to bring a donation of canned soup for the March of the Mayors food drive to support local food banks.
