Used Books

We so appreciate that you’re interested in supporting our independent community bookstore! Please see below for frequently asked questions and additional information about our used book buyback and donation program.

Used Books

What is your policy on buying used books?

We are pleased to offer you store credit for up to three used books at a time. This limit helps us manage our inventory and maintain high quality. You may bring in used books during our open hours.

How does store credit work?

You will receive $1.50 in store credit for hardcover and paperback books and 50 cents in store credit for children’s books. You can use store credit for discounts up to 30% off your purchase of an item in store.

Can I bring a large amount of books to you?

At this time, we are unable to purchase large lots of used books. If you have one or more boxes of books, you may donate them to us. Since we are a business, donations are not tax-deductible. If you are planning to bring several boxes of books, please call us at (662) 570-4247 before you arrive.

Are there any restrictions on used books?

We currently do not accept mass market books or textbooks. We check used books to determine if they are already in stock before offering store credit. Used books need to be in saleable condition, which means no ripped pages or covers, visible stains or mildew, or excessive writing. Hardcovers need to have their dust jackets. Books should not have stickers on the front cover. Our booksellers have the right to exercise their best judgment about the acceptability, condition, and resale value of your books.

What do you do with my extra used books?

While we only offer store credit for three books at a time, we will accept donations of larger amounts of books. We may select donations for resale or offer them to the Friends of the Library at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library or other community organizations for free. We are unable to return donated books once they are in our possession.

Other Donations

We are currently seeking donations of chairs and tables for our event space. We are specifically looking for folding chairs, stackable chairs, benches, and dining tables. We will offer up to $5 in store credit for chairs and up to $10 in store credit for dining tables. To receive the maximum amount of store credit, furniture should be delivered to the bookstore during business hours. We may not be able to accept your donation if the items are not in working condition or if we find them unsuitable for our space. If you are bringing a table or multiple chairs, please call ahead at (662) 570-4247.

Volunteers

We are glad to offer discounts to students and community members who can help with projects around the bookstore. We are currently planning to paint the event space. Please email us at info@friendlycitybooks.com if you can help out.
